Lazarus Saturday

Lazarus Saturday is a Christian holiday in the Orthodox Church, the Armenian Apostolic Church, and the Eastern Catholic Churches which follow the Byzantine Rite. It is observed the day before and shares  litergy with Palm Sunday.

Lazarus Saturday follows the 40 Days of Lent and is a day of part feast and part fast. It is The feast celebrates the resurrection of Lazarus of Bethany, the narrative of which is found in the New Testament Gospel of John. It is the first day of Holy Week in the Orthodox Church and the Eastern Catholic Churches.

In Serbia, Lazarus Saturday also commemorates the Tsar Lazar who died symbolically for Serbia at the Battle of Kosovo. Branches with bells are blessed and distributed to the parishiners.
