The Poe Toaster was dressed in black with a wide-brimmed hat and white scarf. The Toaster would leave three roses and a partially-filled bottle of French cognac, then disappear into the night with rare sightings and no photographs.
According to notes and reports, the original Toaster visited the tomb from 1949 until his death in 1998, after which the tradition was passed on to what may call the original toaster's "son" . In 2006 an unsuccessful attempt was made by several onlookers to capture and identify him. No Toaster has appeared since 2009. .
