Chaand Raat

Chaand Raat (Translation: Night of the Moon),  is the eve of the Muslim festival of Eid ul-Fitr. It is also the last night of Ramadan. It could be either the 29th or 30th of Ramadan, since Ramadan can be 29 or 30 days long, depending on the moon.

Chaand Raat is comparable to Christmas Eve in Christian nations.
On this night families and friends often gather to spot the new moon,  which signals the arrival of the Islamic month of Shawwal  and the day of Eid.

Chaand Raat is celebrated festively and passionately. Buildings are brightly decorated,  and markets remain open late into the night.  Often people will make last minute food preparations and shopping for Eid ul-Fitr,  which is the following day.  People wish each other Chaand Raat Mubarak (Translation: "Have a blessed night of the new moon")  or Eid Mubarak (Translation: "Blessings of the Eid day").
