Ramadan

Ramadan, also known as Ramazan, Ramzan, Ramadhan, or Ramathan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad.

Fasting and refraining from sinful behavior from dawn until sunset is mandatory for all except for those who are ill, elderly, pregnant, nursing, or otherwise physically unable. In some Muslim countries it is a crime if one does not fast during the month and is punished with prison and heavy fines.

Meals occur pre-dawn (suhur) and post-sunset (Iftar).  Ramadan is also observed through Increased Prayer and Charity.  Lanterns are often strung in the streets.  Muslims continue to work through Ramadan. The prophet Muhammed beleived it is important to balance worship and work.  Some Countries however, amend the work schedule to 6 hours a day and 36 a week (U.A.E.).

The Month and the observances continue for 29 or 30 days depending on the moon. The holiday of Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan and the beginning of the next lunar month.
