The game was created as part of a merger agreement between the NFL and the American Football League (AFL) when the two leagues were rivals, that an AFL–NFL World Championship Game between the two leagues' champion teams would play each other at the end of each season. The two officially merged in 1970, and the two Leagues became conferences under the one NFL umbrella.
