You can make a boozy, hair-of-the-dog maple syrup by warming syrup and liquor of your choice just before serving. Bourbon works especially well. Try one part booze to three parts syrup and go from there. You can also reduce the booze a little bit first for a thicker combination.
It was downright controversial. The New York Times wrote an editorial against the practice in the 1880s, and when Teddy Roosevelt was president in the early 1900s, he railed against cutting down trees for Christmas, saying it was a waste of good timber [source: Shenkman]. The tradition, of course, took hold regardless.
No one knows for sure when Jesus was born. The Bible mentions neither a month nor a date.
Don't take "Christ" out of Christmas! That's the rallying cry of many Christians, who become quite frantic over what they view as sacrilege -- removing Christ's holy name from the important holiday, and replacing it with a simple X. A secular X. An impersonal, present-and-Santa-seeking X.
But if we take a closer look, writing "Xmas" isn't a necessarily a slam against the son of God. Far from it. The word "Christ" in Greek is written "Χριστός." Notice anything familiar? The first letter is "X," or chi. Chi is also written as an X in the Roman alphabet. Rather than being an offensive abbreviation for Christmas, "Xmas" is actually a quite logical nickname [sources: Boyett, Bible Suite].

Circus trainers claim two of their elephants were saved from the deadly Siberian cold by vodka.
Emergency ministry spokesman Alexander Davydov said Friday that the elephants were in a trailer that caught fire Thursday outside the city of Novosibirsk, forcing trainers to take them out into the bitter cold before another truck arrived to deliver them to a warm gym at a local community college.
The Komsomolskaya Pravda daily reported that trainer Leonid Labo had the animals, aged 45 and 48, drink 10 liters (2.6 gallons) of vodka diluted in warm water — and a veterinarian said later that only the tips of their ears were frostbitten.
Although scientists say that alcohol can make humans feel warmer but actually lowers their core body temperature, Novosibisk zoo director Rostislav Shilo told the daily that the vodka saved the animals from frostbite and pneumonia, without harming or even intoxicating them.
In 2011, use of marijuana by teenagers hit a 30-year peak, with one out of every 15 high school students reporting they smoke most days, and for the first time U.S. teens reported smoking more pot than cigarettes. But: teenagers don't smoke any more pot in states where medical marijuana is legal than in ones where it's not. Legalization advocates argue that the best way to reduce use by minors is to legalize and regulate pot.
***
Bonus Fact:
It's true that marijuana smoke, like tobacco smoke, contains carcinogens. But even hardcore pot smokers typically consume much less pot than tobacco smokers do cigarettes, probably not enough to cause cancer. A 2006 UCLA study concluded that even heavy marijuana use does not lead to lung cancer. "We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use," said the study's lead author. "What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect." This and other studies suggest that pot can actually inhibit the growth of cancerous tumors.

Infused vodkas -- Fill a clean jar with fruit, herbs or spices and then add vodka. Seal, store and sample until your taste buds tell you it's ready to drink.
Homemade grenadine -- Peel a half-dozen pomegranates, leaving the seeds and membranes intact. Squeeze and filter until you've made about two cups of juice. Pour that into a saucepan, add 1 to 2 cups of sugar, simmer and stir in an ounce of vodka, which acts as a preservative. The syrup should be good for about a month.

A QUEENSLAND biochemist-turned-winemaker claims to have created what drinkers had only dreamed of - wine that is beneficial to your health.
Greg Jardine, founder of Mt Nebo-based company Dr Red Nutraceuticals, filed a patent for Modified Polyphenol Technology in Wines late last year and said the creation would "finally give wine a real medicinal edge".
The process involved ageing red wine for a certain period of time, which enhanced the number of antioxidants within it, made them fat-soluble, rather than water-soluble, and easier to absorb into the bloodstream.
Some studies have shown antioxidants are effective at fighting a multitude of different diseases.
Mr Jardine said he had been working on the process for 10 years but had only recently discovered a way to retain the taste while enhancing antioxidants.

Setsubun ("seasonal division") is a festival held on February 3 or 4, one day before the start of spring according to the Japanese lunar calendar. Setsubun is not a national holiday.
For many centuries, the people of Japan have been performing rituals with the purpose of chasing away evil spirits at the start of spring.
Around the 13th century, for example, it became a custom to drive away evil spirits by the strong smell of burning dried sardine heads, the smoke of burning wood and the noise of drums. While this custom is not popular anymore, a few people still decorate their house entrances with fish heads and holy tree leaves in order to deter evil spirits from entering.
In modern days, the most commonly performed setsubun ritual is the throwing of roasted beans around one's house and at temples and shrines across the country. When throwing the beans, you are supposed to shout "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" ("Devils out, happiness in"). Afterwards you should pick up and eat the number of beans, which corresponds to your age.

---- beer
you may be surprised to learn that beer is less calorific than wine:
A half pint (284ml) of 2.8% ABV bitter (80 calories)
A half pint (284ml) of 4% ABV lager (96 calories)
A 175ml glass of 12.5% red wine (119 calories)
A 175ml glass of 12.5% white wine (131 calories)

ONE DRINK
• For each weird facial contortion by Darryl Sutter caught by NBC's cameras.
• For each penalty minute in the Penguins-Flyers game.
• Every time it's incorrectly referred to as the "2012-13" NHL season.
• If you feel uncomfortable after hearing something Pierre McGuire said about a player.
• Any time a player being interviewed drops a cliche. (Better stock up.)
• When someone refers to an 82-game season as a marathon and a 48-game season as a sprint.
• Anytime someone utters the phrase "hockey is back".
• For every time a player goes to the back with a groin injury, er, sorry, "lower body" injury.
• Anytime a fan is shown with a sign celebrating hockey's return.
&bull For each staged fight that breaks out.
TWO DRINKS
• Anytime a fan is shown with a lockout protest sign.
• If Don Cherry hates on Russians during his first "Coach's Corner" of the season.
• To recover from seeing whatever retina-damaging suit Cherry wears.
• For every Steven Stamkos or Evgeni Malkin goal.
• For each potentially suspendable offense.
• Every time Bob Cole mis-identifies a player.
• Any mention of an asterisk.
• Anytime an announcer makes a mistake and blames it on the lockout.
THREE DRINKS
• If Cory Schneider gets pulled for Roberto Luongo.
• If Donald Fehr or Gary Bettman are in attendance at any game. (CHUG: They're sitting together.)
• Any time an exciting game and overtime has to be decided by a shootout.
• If the Winter Classic cancellation is mentioned.
• An announcer offers a play on words based on the lockout "He went from a work stoppage to working for that goal yuck yuck." (We're looking at you, Paul Steigerwald.)
CHUG
• If "#hockeyisback" is painted somewhere on the ice in every arena (Ugh).
• Any mention of Guy Serota or the NHL Podium.
• Someone laments the cancellation of the All-Star Game.
• If NHL Center Ice or GameCenter Live blacks out a game you want to watch and you have no idea why.
(Ed. Note: Puck Daddy, of course, in no way endorses abuse of alcohol, consumption of alcohol by anyone under the legal drinking age in their region and, without a doubt, the operation of an automobile or any machine while under the influence of alcohol. These games are listed for entertainment purposes and we don't take responsibility for any result of their application. To sum it up, don't be a knucklehead and have fun!)

Now, this is interesting. There have been two studies which indicate that regular consumption of alcohol may actually make you less susceptible to getting colds in the first place (with caveats). The first study was conducted by Carnegie Mellon University in 1993 to see the relation between smoking, drinking, and susceptibility to the common cold. 391 subjects were "intentionally exposed to one of five respiratory viruses and 26 subjects given saline." The study concluded that smokers got sick more often, people who were smokers and drinkers got sick a normal amount, and people who just drank got sick less than the others.
The other study found somewhat different results. Published in 2001, the study looked at 4,272 faculty and staff of five Spanish universities. It found that alcohol intake in the form of beer and spirits had no effect whatsoever on a persons susceptibility to the common cold. However, the study concluded that people who drank more than 14 glasses of wine per week were a whopping 60 percent less likely to get sick, even more so for drinkers of red wine. That is a huge number. It is suspected, however, that it isn't the alcohol directly, but rather the high levels of antioxidants which are in the wine. If that's the case then drinkers of Guinness and other dark beers (which are high in similar antioxidants) might net similar benefits. It must be said, though, that 14 glasses of wine per week is not an insignificant amount (two per night, on average), and of course, there may be health risks that outweigh the cold-fighting benefits for some people.

5 Fun Facts About St. Patrick's Day
By Tanya Lewis, LiveScience Staff Writer | LiveScience.com – 6 hours ago
Every year on March 17, millions of people gussy themselves up in green attire, hold big parades and drink lots of beer, all in the name of an old Irish saint. But what's the history of this emerald-hued holiday, and why do we celebrate it with shamrocks and alcohol?
Who was St. Patrick?
St. Patrick was a Christian missionary, bishop and a patron saint of Ireland. He was born in Roman Britain to a wealthy family near the end of the fourth century. At age 16, he was captured by Irish raiders and brought to Ireland, where he spent six years in captivity, working as a shepherd. He became a devout Christian and, it's believed, began to dream of converting the Irish to Christianity. He then escaped back to England. He wrote that a voice — God's — spoke to him in a dream telling him to leave Ireland.
After reaching England, Patrick described having a second dream in which an angel told him to go back to Ireland as a missionary. He started religious training to become a priest. He was later sent to Ireland on a mission to convert the Irish to Christianity and minister to Christians already there. Rather than replacing pagan Irish rituals, he incorporated them into his teachings. For instance, the Irish used to honor their gods with fire, so Patrick used bonfires to celebrate Easter. He died in A.D. 461 on March 17, which became St. Patrick's Day.
Why green clothes?
Wearing green has become a staple of St. Patrick's Day, but the holiday was originally associated with the color blue. It's thought that the shift to green happened because of Ireland's nickname "The Emerald Isle," the green in the Irish flag and the shamrock, or clover. Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn as early as the 17th century. During the Irish Rebellion of 1798, an uprising against British rule in Ireland, Irish soldiers wore full green uniforms on March 17 to make a political statement. Legend has it that wearing green makes a person invisible to leprechauns that will pinch someone if they see them. [Image Gallery: One-of-a-Kind Places on Earth]
In Ireland, some people still adhere to the tradition of Catholics wearing green and Protestants wearing orange, the colors that represent their respective religious sects on the Irish flag.
Where the shamrock came from
According to folklore, St. Patrick used the shamrock, the familiar three-leafed clover, to explain the Christian Holy Trinity. The word "shamrock" comes from the Irish word "seamróg," meaning "little clover." It is the symbol of Ireland, and wearing and displaying shamrocks has become a widespread practice on St. Patrick's Day.
Why so much beer?
Beer is one of the most widely consumed beverages on St. Patrick's Day.
While the Irish beer Guinness remains a top St. Patty's Day choice, a disturbing trend is the consumption of green beer, dyed with food coloring. Some studies have linked food coloring to cancer (at least in lab animals) and headaches, though revelers would probably have to drink a lot more dye than the beers contain to cause health problems, according to nutrition expert Keri Glassman, founder and president of a nutrition practice based in New York City.
It's no surprise that imbibing beer or other alcoholic beverages affects brain function, and a new study helps reveal what's going on. The ethanol in these drinks disrupts connections between the brain's visual and motor areas, hindering muscle coordination, a recent study found.
Parades and celebration
Celebrations of St. Patrick's Day would not be complete without parades, festivals and Céilithe, a social gathering that typically involves Gaelic folk music and dancing. Céilithe, also known as Céilidh, has its origins in Ireland and Scotland, but has spread with the Irish and Scottish diasporas.
Many cities hold parades in honor of the holiday. The New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade is the largest parade in the world. It was first held in 1762, 14 years before the Declaration of Independence, by a group of homesick Irish expats and soldiers who served with the British Army in the American colonies, according to the parade's website.
The world's shortest St. Patrick's Day parade is held in the Irish village of Dripsey. It lasts only 100 yards, spanning the distance between the village's two pubs.

You can make a boozy, hair-of-the-dog maple syrup by warming syrup and liquor of your choice just before serving. Bourbon works especially well. Try one part booze to three parts syrup and go from there. You can also reduce the booze a little bit first for a thicker combination.

t was downright controversial.

2. History of Up-Helly-Aa
UP-HELLY-A’ is a relatively modern festival. There is some evidence that people in rural Shetland celebrated the 24th day after Christmas as “Antonmas” or “Up Helly Night”, but there is no evidence that their cousins in Lerwick did the same. The emergence of Yuletide and New Year festivities in the town seems to post-date the Napoleonic Wars, when soldiers and sailors came home with rowdy habitats and a taste for firearms.
On olde Christmas eve in 1824 a visiting Methodist missionary wrote in his diary that “the whole town was in an uproar: from twelve o’clock last night until late this night blowing of horns, beating of drums, tinkling of old tin kettles, firing of guns, shouting, bawling, fiddling, fifeing, drinking, fighting. This was the state of the town all night – the street was thronged with people as any fair I ever saw in England.”
As Lerwick grew in size the celebrations became more elaborate. Sometime around 1840 the participants introduced burning tar barrels into the proceedings. “Sometimes”, as one observer wrote, “there were two tubs fastened to a great raft-like frame knocked together at the Docks, whence the combustibles were generally obtained. Two chains were fastened to the bogie supporting the capacious tub or tar-barrel...eked to these were two strong ropes on which a motley mob, wearing masks for the most part, fastened. A party of about a dozen was told off to stir up the molten contents.”
The main street of Lerwick in the mid-19th century was extremely narrow, and rival groups of tar- barrelers frequently clashed in the middle. The proceedings were thus dangerous and dirty, and Lerwick’s middle classes often complained about them. The Town Council began to appoint special constables every Christmas to control the revellers with only limited success. When the end came for tar-barreling, in the early 1870’s it seems to have been because the young Lerwegians themselves had decided it was time for a change.
Around 1870 a group of young men in the town with intellectual interests injected a series of new ideas into the proceedings. First the improvised the name Up-Helly-A’, and gradually postponed the celebrations until the end of January. Secondly, they introduced a far more elaborate element of disguise – “guizing” – into the new festival. Thirdly, they inaugurated a torchlight procession.
At the same time they were toying with the idea of introducing Viking themes to their new festival. The first sign of this new development appearing in 1877, but it was not until the late 1880’s that a Viking longship – the “galley” – appeared, and as late as 1906 that “Guizer Jarl”, the chief guizer, arrived on the scene. It was not until after the First World War that there was a squad of Vikings, the “Guizer Jarl Squad”, in the procession every year.
Up to the Second World War Up-Helly-A’ was overwhelmingly a festival of young working class men and during the depression years the operation was run on a shoestring. In the winter of 1931-32 there was an unsuccessful move to cancel the festival because of the dire economic situation in the town. At the same time the Up-Helly-A’ committee became a self- confident organization which poke fun at the pompous in the by then long-established Up- Helly-A’ bill – sometimes driving their victims to fury. Since 1949, when the festival resumed after the war, much has changed and much has remained the same. That year the BBC recorded a major radio programme on Up-Helly-A’, and from that moment Up-Helly-A’ – note noted for its split-second timing before the war – became a model of efficient organization. The numbers participating in the festival have become much greater, and the resources required correspondingly larger. Whereas in the 19th century individuals kept open house to welcome the guizers on Up-Helly-A’ night, men and women now co-operate to open large hall throughout the town to entertain them.
However, despite the changes there are numerous threads connecting the Up-Helly-A’ of today with its predecessors 150 years ago.
presidents
George Washington's teeth weren't wooden. Contrary to popular belief, the country's first president had dentures made of gold, ivory, lead, and animal teeth.
Thomas Jefferson founded the university in 1819 on land that once belonged to eventual President James Monroe. Jefferson is the only president to have ever founded an institution of higher learning.
After finishing his undergraduate degree in 2 years, James Madison stayed at the university for an additional year, making him the Ivy League institution's first graduate student.
Andrew Jackson taught his parrot to curse. The parrot had to be removed from President Jackson's funeral because it wouldn't stop swearing.
Not only was Chester A. Arthur a very sharp dresser (he owned over 80 pairs of pants) but he often took late night strolls around D.C. with friends, not returning home until 3 or 4 in the morning.
Herbert Hoover moved his family to China before becoming President, and he and his wife learned to speak Mandarin Chinese fluently. They would speak the language around the White House to prevent others from understanding them.
Anchor Links
Step 1: Creating the link
1.Drag and drop an HTML Widget onto your page where you would like the text to appear for your visitor to click on, for this example it will be the bottom of the page.
2.Enter this code in the HTML Widget: <a href="#Top">Jump to Top</a>
What this bit of code is saying is: Top is the specific place on the page I want to jump, and Jump to Top is the text I want the link to display.
Step 2: Marking the Spot
1.Drag and drop an HTML Widget onto your page where you would like the link created in Step 1 to take the clicker, for this example it would be the top of the page.
2.Enter this code in the HTML Widget: <a name="Top"></a>
What this bit of code is saying is: Here is the place named Top, and a link with this place specified needs to go here.
Keep in mind that Top and Jump to Top are arbitrary. You could create a link that would go to Center or to a specific topic on a page called News.
Let's do one more example. Say you want a user to be able to jump from the top of your page to a specific area halfway down the page which discusses News.
On Bubble Gum Day, everyone who donates 50¢ or more gets to chew gum at school, with
proceeds going to any charity the school chooses. Kids have fun, while raising money for a good
cause. Some creative teachers even incorporate bubble gum into their lessons for the day.
Started in 2006 by children’s book author Ruth Spiro, Bubble Gum Day has become a sweet
success. “I have two kids, and it seemed they were always participating in school fundraisers that
required them to sell things like wrapping paper and candy,” says Spiro. “Bubble Gum
Day offers schools a fun way to raise money, without kids having to sell stuff. I thought it would
be cool to have lots of kids all chewing gum and raising money on the same day, which is why I
created the holiday.”
In past years, schools have raised funds to purchase snack foods for Marines serving in Iraq,
animals through Heifer International, books for Reading is Fundamental, and more. Any
meaningful cause can be the recipient of Bubble Gum Day funds. The celebration isn’t limited to
schools – many libraries, community centers, and even businesses hold bubble gum events for
their customers and employees. Bubble Gum Day has previously been featured in the following
media:
• “Profile America” radio spot by The U.S. Census Bureau
• NASA’s educational website, Space Place
• Good Day Sacramento (CBS 13 / KOVR Sacramento)
• The Washington Post Express
• The Almanac for Kids
Recently, French filmmakers traveled to Chicago to interview Ms. Spiro and see her in action

The word carnival comed from the Latin 'carne valle' meaning 'goodbye to meat' alluding to the need to use up meat before Lent. Today the word has a totally different meaning - Thank God!
The origins of carnival come from the hedonistic feasts of ancient Rome and Greece but their modern day celebration was invented in the Spanish and Portuguese colonies. These festivals are well known for drinking, dancing dressing up and more often not dressing up !
People dressed up at carnival to hide their identity so they could party hard and not be blamed for sinful acts - oh the shame!
The carnival is presided over by King Momo (Rei Momo in Portuguese or Rey Momo in Spanish), who on the opening day orders his subjects to party. Momo is usually a fat tall man or a large paper mache doll.
After years of street dancing we have finally compilled the definitive Carnivals of the World Top 10 list. After much deliberation we have the best carnivals of 2012 based on our experiences and your suggestions on Facebook, twitter and on our website. We think the list below is a fair reflection of the best carnivals in the world, if you disagree add a carnival to Festivalpig.com here or else...tough!
Carnaval Checklist

- Small amount of cash
- Funky costume
- Lots of Water & a little alcohol (is that the wrong way round?)

- Pen to mark off items on checklist
No.10 Mardi Gras in New Orleans
21st February 2012
This originated as a French fertility ritual. In 1699 Iberville, the French explorer, stopped on the banks of the Misissipi river and celebrated the advent of Spring as he knew his fellow countrymen were back in France doing likewise. There is no record of women attending this event, hence we may concluded this Mardi Gras was beadless :@( Today beads define this event but there are lots of other great reasons to go there like the music and parades.
No.9 Barranquilla Columbia
18th - 21st February 2012
In 2003, UNESCO declared Barranquilla's carnival to be a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Every year thousands of tourists delare Barranquilla's carnaval to be a Masterpiece of Partying. This festival is a fusion of European, African and Indian traditions. This begins four days before Ash Wednesday and reaches its climax the next Saturday during Batalla de las Flores/battle of the flowers where the colour of the Colombians come face to face in a unique battle of color, flowers, beauty, and peace. The typical carnival characters of Rey Momo, María Moñitas, and Hombre Caimán are involved in this parade as well as the carnaval queen, dwarves and large puppet heads!
The following day the Desfile de la Gran Parada/the great parade takes place with torito folk dances, Garabato dancers, and the dances of the hilanderas/spinners. There is also the 84th Street Parade also known as the Funeral of Joselito Carnaval where the carnival queen dresses in black throwing flowers at everyone and mourns the loss of Joselito. Joselito is a festival character for everyone to impersonate or carry a figure of, it signals the end of the celebrations and Dios Momos big party.
No.8 Brooklyn Carnival
September 3rd 2012
The West Indie Carnival in Brooklyn begins at 11am an the route is Utica Avenue to Grand Army Plaza along Eastern Parkway. This celebration takes place from the Thursday to Labor day with a Dimanche Gras/Fat Sunday, a Kiddie Carnival and a steel drum competition then the main parade on Labor Day Monday. This is New Yorks biggest outdoor event attracting over a million party people and the traditions of the Labor Day are mainly Caribbean- this is one not to be missed.
No.7 Goa
18th - 21st February 2012
Nowhere else in India celebrates carnival as it was introduced by the Portuguese who ruled over Goa for over five hundred years. This festival was actually in decline before the liberation of Goa and since then it has attracted thousands of visitors from all around the globe. Despite being a Christians celebration the three-day street party has also taken many Hindu and western traditions.
Then begins the weeklong event, which is a time of unbridled festivity and merry-making, which has been celebrated since the 18th Century. For these couple of days there are bands on floats and people dancing everywhere all nights, there are also grand balls held in the evenings. At the end of the week the festivities conclude with the famous red-and-black dance held by the Club National in Panajim.
No.6 Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival
17th - 26th February 2012
Once banned by the Spanish dictator Franco this is one of the biggest crowd pullers in the world. None of the usual rules apply here: there is lots of cross dressing and the patry doesn't hit the streets until midnight !
Tenerife's carnaval begins with the opening parade & the election of a Carnaval Queen followed. Maids of Honour and entourages are driven through the streets of Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz accompanied by the traditional ‘murgas’ in clown costume and other revellers in colorful costumes.
The ‘Burial of the Sardine’ marks the half way point on Ash Wednesday when hordes of weeping ‘widows’ follow a funeral cortège for a giant papier mâché sardine down to the harbour where the ‘corpse’ is set alight and fireworks light up the sky and eerie singing fills the air. The ‘Gran Cosa Apoteosis’ is the closing parade of Carnaval when eggshells and cloth balls held together by paste and thrown onto the passing parade from windows and balconies. Other fun times include the Drag Marathon.
No.5 Notting Hill
August 27th 2012 - August Bank Holiday
This is the second biggest carnaval in the world, Notting Hill usually brings crowds of about a million people observing and about 60,000 people participating in the performances. The carnival has 5 types of music : Calypso, Steel pan / pans, Mas (masquerade), Static and Mobile systems. There’s a great variety of African and Caribbean beats.
No.4 Oruro
17th - 22nd February 2012
Expect Around 600,000 people line the streets during Oruro Carnival with hundreds of traditional Bolivian bands, thousands of traditional dancers and a procession that takes a full day to end. The parade is led by San Miguel who is followed by devils, El Tio - lord of the underworld and lots of conquistadores painted like devils. This parade makes its way to the soccer stadium where good triumphs over evil through the art of dance. Also many farmers and miners offer the fruit of their labour for the carnival.
No.3 Rio Carnival
17th - 22nd February 2012
When people think carnaval they think Rio De Janeiro. This city oozes cool from Ipanema to Copacabana and the coolness peaks in the days leading up to lent. The streets of Rio are lined with samba schools and as blocos pass through the streets there is a deafening thunder of drums. The humidity is too much for scantilly clad locals who chase the blocos around town. The well known Rio blocos include:
Cordão do Bola Preta This traditional bloco is in the centre of the city and about 600,000 people can attended it.
Suvaco do Cristo This is the Botanic Garden area under the Redeemer's arm (kinda in his armpit actually!).
Carmelitas This group was supposedly created by nuns, but in fact it is just a theme chosen by the band. They usually play around the hills of Santa Teresa.
Simpatia é Quase Amor One of the most popular parades in Ipanema. Translates as ‘Friendliness is almost love’.
Banda de Ipanema The original Ipanema bloco attracting families, drag queens and the gay population.
No.2 Olinda, Brasil
17th - 22nd February 2012
Most Brazilians will tell you that Olinda has the best carnaval in Brazil. Why ? well for starters Pernambuco (the region) has the unique trevo music, afoxé instruments, colorful umbrellas & Maracatu (mix of theatre and dance) umbrellas as well as foliõe bands and the parading of giant dolls.
The festival has a more African influence compared to the European feel of the Rio carnival which is evident in the flirty dances like the gut flexing bate-coxa, the umbrella-spinning frevo, the noble maracatú or the extremely graceful caboclinho. The carnival celebrations can start as early as December in Olinda & neighbouring city of Recife so a trip to the Pernambuco could encompass a couple of days in each. In Recife the carnival on Boa Viage can be overpriced and you will get a more authenthic experience at Recife Antigo. Try to get to Galo da Madrugada it's a rooster crowing world and kicks off a serious party at 5.30am on the first Saturday of carnival in Bairro de São José.. Salvador de Bahia is also great for carnival butwe have to stop here before we name every town in Brazil :)
No.1 Trinidad
17th - 22nd February 2012
Trinidad's carnival is the meeting of European religion, brought by the Settlers, and African culture, brought by African slaves, who were also paying respect to African mythology and music. If you're going to make it here plan well ahead.
Bring plenty of spare clothes - you never know how you will feel on the day! The most popular dance is calypso followed by the soca but also beware of Wining this is grinding and if you are a tourist (or look like one) expect ot be on the receiving of much Wining :)
Many of the carnival bands will provide snacks - for many tourists carnival is a long day drinking in the sun!
BTW We know there are a few who didn't make this list :( like the Amazonian carnival Boi Bumba in Parintins, Mardi Gras in Sydney, the Venice carnival & the Rejavik carnival- maybe next year!
