Edmund Fitzgerald Anniversary

On the Sunday closest to November 10
On November 10, 1975, the 26,000-ton ore carrier SS Edmund Fitzgerald, the largest ship on the Great Lakes in its time and known as "The Queen of the Great Lakes," sank during a deadly storm in Lake Superior. In commemoration of that tragedy, a number of events are held.
The primary event is held at the Mariners' Church in downtown Detroit, Mich. As the names of the 29 lost crewmen are read out, a family member or friend of the deceased rings a ship's bell. Beginning in 2006, the church has expanded its service to a 30th ring to remember all those sailors who have been lost on the Great Lakes, some 30,000 lives lost in 6,000 shipwrecks over the years. Additional events were held for the 30th anniversary of the sinking in 2005. At the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society and Museum in Whitefish Point, Mich., near where the sinking occurred, a ship's bell recovered from the wreck was rung in a special ceremony. At the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle in the Detroit River, 29 lanterns were placed around an anchor that came from the Fitzgerald .

Feb. 13: Galentine’s Day (Parks and Recreation)

April 5: First Contact Day (Star Trek)
Humans officially made contact with their first alien species, Vulcans, on this day in 2063. Kids get the day off from school, eat food, listen to rock ’n’ roll and recite the first words spoken in the encounter: “Live long and prosper.”

April 8: Rex Manning Day (Empire Records)
The employees of a soon-to-be-sold record store prepare for the arrival of an arrogant, washed-up singer. Pay tribute by rocking the soundtrack, not shaving your head to a Martinis song. Say no more, mon amour.

April 18: Ted Party Day (Parks and Recreation)
Poor handwriting in a Pawnee law leads the citizens to ceremonially dump a man named Ted into Ramsett Park Lake every year on the anniversary of the Great Tea Dump of 1817.

May 4: Cinco de Cuatro (Arrested Development)
Lucille and George throw a party on the day before Cinco de Mayo to deplete party supplies and force their Hispanic employees to work on May 5, but over 30 years, the workers grow to embrace the holiday.

Oct. 3: Oct. 3 (Mean Girls)
Cady’s crush, Aaron Samuels, leans back during math and asks, “What day is it?” “It’s Oct. 3,” she replies. That’s it. Seriously. But fans of the cult classic use the date as a chance to paste movie quotes all over social media.

Oct. 21: Back to the Future Day (Back to the Future Part II)
Doc Brown and Marty McFly arrive in this soon-to-come date in 2015 to find a world with hover boards, flying cars, video chat and so much more. It’s a chance to wonder what might have been.

Christmas: Merlinpeen (30 Rock)
The Verdukian Holiday of Mouth Pleasures involves leaving work early to go to the movies and eating free sausage pizza followed by gentle flossing from a blond virgin. The whole thing was a ploy by the TGS writers, who leaned on a made-up religion to get out of Kenneth’s Secret Santa Fun Swap.

Freedom Day (Futurama) from the episode "A Taste of Freedom"
major Earthican event is the ultimate in self-indulgent holidays. The citizens of Earth get to freely express themselves by doing whatever they want without consequence and relax in traditional Freedom hot tubs -- sans bathing suits, naturally. There's even a yearly parade in Washington, D.C., followed by fireworks and a speech from the President of Earth.
Freedom Day allows you to do whatever you want, including nude hot tubbing.

"Fear of a Bot Planet"
Robanukah, on the other hand, is a robot holiday Bender invented to skip work. It’s the holiest time on the robot calendar, and comes after the equally-fake Robomadan and Robonzaa. To mark Robanukah, fembots wrestle in petroleum for six-and-a-half weeks.

Refrigerator Day (Dinosaurs)
The happiest holiday in Pangaea
Fridge Day includes presents, decorations and carols that help promote commercialized goods. Pangea and America
Before the fridge, dinosaurs roamed for food, so Pangea’s most important holiday celebrates this life-changing invention. Fridge Day is the dinosaurs’ answer to Christmas, and is observed by giving presents, decorating the home, singing festive carols and a pageant. However, like Christmas, commercialization can interfere, and even dinosaurs can get carried away.

Yaksmas Eve (Ren & Stimpy) from the album Ren & Stimpy's Crock O' Christmas
Stimpy believes Yaksmas is a real holiday while Ren thinks it’s just silly.
It’s a glorious evening, with the night air smelling of hope and sausages as Stimpy waits anxiously for Stinky Wizzleteats and the Shaven Yak to visit
Traditions include laying out wrinkled chicken livers for Ol' Saint Wizzleteats and noshing on meat by-products and pre-chewed gum before exchanging gifts on Yaksmas morning.
Don’t forget to hang your dirty long johns on the wall, Yaksmas is upon us! Every child dreams of seeing Stinky Wizzleteats as he floats through the air in his enchanted canoe. Make sure to decorate appropriately so he chooses your lawn to pass out on. If you’ve been nice, you can expect lots of sausage and pre-chewed bubble gum for the whole family to enjoy.

December Solstice
The Festival of the Bells – “Fraggle Rock,” “A Muppet Family Christmas”
Fraggle legend says that when the weather gets colder near Winter Solstice, the Rock slows down. To kick start it for another year, the Great Bell found at the center of the Rock must ring. For that to happen, all Fraggles must ring their own bells. Other rituals include the dance of the Weebabeast and giving the same pebble to each other over and over.
Fraggles' own Solstice holiday, the Festival of the Bells,
When the Rock slows down in the winter, the Fraggles hold the Festival of the Bells to make sure it keeps moving. As part of the celebration, they ring bells to awaken the Great Bell at the heart of the Rock. They also dress up as a Weebabeast, who used to guard the Great Bell when the Rock was small.

June 31 (July 1st)
Weasel Stomping Day – “Robot Chicken” (feat. “Weird Al” Yankovic)
"Weasel Stomping Day" is a song by American parodist "Weird Al" Yankovic, which appears on his 2006 album Straight Outta Lynwood.
Grab your heaviest boots and your Viking helmet, and don’t forget to smear the lawn with mayonnaise to attract your furry victims. Weasel Stomping Day happens every year on the fictional date of June 31st, and is just one example of a holiday PETA would hate. But boy, there’s nothing like the sound of cracking weasel bones.
It is also one of six songs on the album to have an animated music video, created for the Adult Swim show Robot Chicken. It is the shortest track on the album.

This video appeared in "The Munnery", the twelfth episode of the second season, which aired on September 24, 2006, two days before the album was released. Al has jokingly said that Weasel Stomping Day falls on June 31, a day that does not exist in the Gregorian calendar.

"Secret Santa" December 10, 2009
If you want to get out of a confusing Secret Santa, invent a religion. Merlinpeen is one of the most celebrated traditions of Verdukianism, and allows adherents to leave work early to go see a movie. Other bizarre customs include decorating with a bowl of meat cubes and a picture of Jimmy Connors, and much, much more. There’s even a Merlinpeen carol!! Sorta.
Frank, Toofer, and Lutz proclaim they are strict adherents of "Verdukianism," a religion they make up on the spot, and have Kenneth give them things they claim to need for "Merlinpeen," the Verdukian Holiday of Mouth Pleasures (such as meat-lover's pizza and having their teeth flossed by a blonde virgin). Their famous holiday song is, "Oh, Meatbowl of Verduke, you bring me such pizza. Meatbowl."

Whacking Day – “The Simpsons”
"Whacking Day"  Original air date April 29, 1993
This ritual is not for the faint of heart: Every May 10th, the people of Springfield lure snakes into town to beat them with wooden clubs. The holiday actually originated as a way to beat the Irish, but fortunately Bart and Barry White helped the town change their ways. In reality, Whacking Day was based on a similar snake-beating festival in Texas. Don’t pretend you’re surprised.

Cross-Quarter days which fall approximately halfway between a solstice and an equinox. And each one has a minor holiday attached to it. The first Cross-Quarter Day, around February 1st (August 1st in the Southern hemisphere), is Imbolic. The Second, around May 1st (November 1st in the Southern hemisphere), is Beltane. The Third, around August 1st (February 1st in the Southern hemisphere), is Lammas and Lughnasadh, The Fourth, around November 1st (May 1st in the Southern hemisphere), is Samhain.

These festivals are opposite (6 months apart) in the calendar between the Northern and Southern hemispheres because the seasons are opposite. However, some celebrations that have been established in the northern hemisphere and are rooted in the cross-quarter festivals are celebrated at the same time of year around the earth. In the Northern Hemisphere, Groundhog Day (February 2nd) has roots in Imbolic, May Day (May 1st) has roots in Beltane, August Eve (July 31st) has roots in Lammas. All Saint's Day, and Halloween (October 31st) have roots in Samhain.

Around the time of the spring equinox, Lady Day became the traditional day for hiring farm laborers for the planting and harvesting seasons ahead. (In the church calendar, this day became the feast of the Angel Gabriel's annunciation to the Virgin Mary that she would be the mother of Christ.)

Around the time of the summer solstice, this day was the midpoint of the growing season, halfway between planting and harvest. (The English church later celebrated this day as the birthday of John the Baptist, who foretold the birth of Jesus exactly six months later.)

Around the time of the fall equinox, the harvest commenced on this day, and there were great fairs and festivals. This started the custom of early autumnal elections, because it was a convenient time for people to gather. Elections came to be shifted to November in the American climate, where the harvest season was more stretched out.

Cross-Quarter Days

Candlemas is a Christian holiday named after the candles lit that day in churches to celebrate the presentation of the Christ Child in the temple of Jerusalem. The holiday originates from the Pagan holiday of Imbolc (lambs' milk) because the lambing season began. It was also called Brigantia for the Celtic female deity of light, calling attention to the Sun's being halfway on its advance from the winter solstice to the spring equinox.

• It was not held as a good omen if the day itself was bright and sunny, for that betokened snow and frost to continue to the hiring of the laborers 6 weeks later on Lady Day.
• If it was cloudy and dark, warmth and rain would thaw out the fields and have them ready for planting. Our Groundhog Day is a remote survivor of that belief.

May 1, May Day

May Day, or Beltane, was the halfway point between the spring equinox and the summer solstice, and marked the beginning of summer for the ancient Celts. It was a day for dance and song to hail the sown fields starting to sprout.
• Beltane was a time for the pairing of young couples, though not yet their wedding, which would not come until the next Cross-Quarter Day, after three months of seeing how they suited each other.
• Today's June weddings came from this tradition; given impatience of the couple, the waiting period came to be shortened to a six-week span.

August 1, Lughnasadh

Lughnasadh was the wedding of the Sun god Lugh to the Earth goddess, causing the ripening of crops.
• The church transformed it into an offering from the first fruits of the land; the first loaves baked from the new wheat were offered at the Loaf Mass, which became corrupted in pronunciation to Lammas.

October 31, Samhain

Samhain (“summer's end”), or Halloween, marked the beginning of winter for the ancient Celts, and many historians believe that it served as the start of the new year in the Celtic calendar. It was the day when the cattle were brought in from pasture; those needed for the winter's supply of meat would be slaughtered. Since Samhain was the death-night of the old year, it came to be associated with ghosts and graveyards. It has happier associations too, such as apple bobbing, which was a form of telling fortunes for the new year.

He crawled when he was 1 years old.  They cheared all the way.  Made his first careful steps at two.  KaKa was his famous first word, branded deep through their minds.  They will die but a few crucial parts will live on, through the king.

A small flash among billions more, on a speck among trillions more.  rapidly expanding lines of infinite length and time. there will be many more.

Many offer the king their breath, they would die and kill for the life, the stakes couldn't be higher, and there will be many more.

The extinguishing flame releases translucent spheres of torment.  few are overcome by the absence, what is and what should be, most unwilling to focus, terrified of what could be in the dark.

I wished she could give one.

I believed she didn't want me to ask, but maybe provide the answer. )

The Seventh Circle

My daughter was at my feet and I remember starting to drift off
I remember opening my eyes and telling her that I loved her
closing my eyes in that bed and I opened them and I was standing in the most beautiful tunnel of light I could ever describe.
All my worries were suddenly gone
I knew my body was dead
was overtaken by a level of bliss
two vaguely human shapes walked me down the tunnel
communicating with the angels, but that she didn’t need to use words to do so; it was as though they all could telepathically and effortlessly speak with one another.
there was a third figure nearby. To her right, McVea said she recognized God. After years of lamenting over his existence and wondering why he would have allowed her to suffer through sexual abuse at such a young age, as well as other challenges, she said she instantly fell before him in worship.
loved heaven so much in those moments that she had no urge to return to earth.

James Madison was known to consume a pint of whiskey a day

George Washington spent a full 7% of his income while in office on booze. His infamous farewell party tab totaled over $15,000 present-day dollars. He had to change out his teeth because they would become stained with brandy and wine. His estate, according to the estimable Modern Drunkard, was at one point America’s biggest whiskey producer, bottling (barreling?) an astonishing 11,000 gallons in 1799 alone.

Thomas Jeffreson the first person to stock the White House with wine (and spent a third of his salary on it during his first year)

I'm not sure what the proper name for this game is, but my friends and I are just fine with referring to it as "The Game from Inglourious Basterds."

If you've seen the movie, then you know the one I'm talking about.

All you need to play the game is a bunch of 3x5 cards and a sharpie. You write the name of a famous person on the card, and pass it face down to the person on your left. That person licks the back of the card and sticks it on his or her forehead.

Somebody, it doesn't matter who, gets the game going by volunteering to be first. That person gets to ask 10 questions that are meant to help them guess what name is on their forehead.
