U.S.A. FLAG DAY
In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14th. It commemorates the adoption of the U.S. flag (Stars and Stripes), which occured on June 14th by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777. At that time it had only 13 stars, to match its 13 stripes.
Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag. It is not clear who actually designed it, but the experts at the Betsy Ross House suggest it was Francis Hopkinson, a New Jersey delegate to the Continental Congress and a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
June 14th, 1777, the Continental Congress, looking to promote national pride and unity, adopted the national flag. "Resolved: that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation."
The United States Army also celebrates the Army Birthday on this date. National Flag Week (USA) is the week of June 14th. Flag Day is not an official U.S. federal holiday, although it is a state holiday in Pennsylvania.
