Setup

The Game is usually administered by a player that has been "Made a Cardinal", meaning they have completed the game with no violations. Usually at least some of the rules are not revealed prior to the game. Usually the first contestant will attempt once, followed by another, and so on (later tries have the advantage of seeing prior contestant's mistakes). The contestant begins sitting down at a table.

Gameplay

The Contestant must say "Cardinal puff, may I begin?"

Another player that is a cardinal will say "Yes, you may begin".

The contestant then must pick up the glass while only holding the pinky away from the glass and say "I am drinking cardinal puff for the very first time tonight", then drink a very large single drink (about 1/3 of the glass), tap the glass once on the table, and set it back down. The contestant must tap table once with their index finger of one hand, then the index finger of the other, tap table underneath once with one finger of both hands, snap with both hands once.

The contestant then must pick up the glass while holding the pinky and ring finger away from the glass and say "I am drinking cardinal puff puff for the second time tonight", then drink a very large single drink (about 1/3 of the glass), tap the glass twice on the table, and set it back down. The contestant must tap table once with their index finger of one hand, then once with the index finger of the other, then once more each, tap table underneath twice with one finger of both hands, snap with both hands twice.

The contestant then must pick up the glass while only holding the pinky, ring finger, and index finger away from the glass and say "I am drinking cardinal puff puff puff for the third and final time tonight", then drink (litterally) every last drop of the glass, tap the glass three times on the table, and set it back down. The contestant must tap table once with their index finger of one hand, then once with the index finger of the other, then twice more each, tap table underneath three times with one finger of both hands, snap with both hands three times.

The contestant must then grasp the class with an inverted grip and say “Once a Cardinal, always a Cardinal, to the very last drop.” and hold the glass upside down over their head. If a drop pours out it is a violation and they have failed. Any violation of any other rules throught the game constitutes failure.

Finger Reversal (Variation A)

Some play that instead of holding one finger away one on the first time, one finger is used (with the thumb) to lift the glass and all other fingers are held away from the glass. Two fingers (and a thumb) are used for the second time, and three fingers (and a thumb) for the third time.

Bet your Sweet Ass (Variation B)

Some play that during the course of the evening if anyone asks a player who is a cardinal (has completed the game) if they are a cardinal, they must answer "you bet your sweet ass I am a cardinal". If the Cardinal did not respond correctly, they must finish an entire drink.

Extended Rules (Variation C)

Some play that in place of snapping the players must tap each thigh top, tap each thigh back side, tap each foot, stand up, then sit down. All tasks are doubled and trippled on the second and third time respectively.

Six Drinks (Variation D)

Some play that instead of One large drink for the second time, two drinks are to be done. Three for the third time.

Eagle Puff (Variation E)

Eagle puff is cardinal puff with only two times (the glass must be completely empty by the second try.

Bishop Puff (Variation F)

Bishop Puff is Cardinal Puff with two pint glasses that must be completely finished.

Arch-Bishop Puff (Variation G)

Arch Bishop Puff is Cardinal Puff with three pint glasses that must be completely finished.

Pope Puff (Variation H)

Pope Puff is Cardinal Puff with a pitcher that must be completely finished.

Cardnial Races (Variation I)

Some time the Cardinal Game to determine who has the fastest start to finish time.

Verbal Variations

Some play that instead of saying "I am drinking cardinal puff for the very first time tonight", they say "I dedicate the first drink of the night to cardinal puff". Same change for the other tries (Puff is repeated in the same manner).

Some say “I drink to the honorable Cardinal Puff for the first time tonight” on the first try, “To the Cardinal Puff Puff, for the second time this evening” on the second try, and “I drink to the Cardinal Puff, Puff, Puff, for the third and final time this evening”

Some finish with “Once a Cardinal, always a Cardinal, never spill a drop.”
